Pixel Launcher might gain optional support for full app names with Android 15

The Google Pixel Launcher might get a handy new feature that lets you display longer app names in two lines rather than truncating them. At present, if an app has a longer name, part of the name gets truncated. For instance, the app “COD Warzone” shows up as “COD Warz…” in the apps list on my Pixel 7a. However, with Android 15, a new setting will allow you to show longer app names in two lines, rather than being limited to one line.

This new “Show long app names” toggle was spotted by Mishaal Rahman who highlighted it over at Android Authority. Notably, this isn’t the first time that we’re seeing the change. In early December last year, we spotted app names appearing in two lines on Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2. This change was later reverted back to the traditional layout. But with the discovery of the “Show long app names” toggle in the Pixel Launcher settings, it’s clear Google is making progress with the feature.

According to the report, this new “Show long app names” toggle will apply to the apps list and the search results, not the home screen. That said, I feel like it makes sense to have it as an optional feature rather than a forced change, as it was with Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2. Enabling the feature means you’ll be able to view one less row in the apps list. Furthermore, if you don’t have many apps with long names, it just makes the app drawer seem like it has wasted space.
