Early benchmark results show Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor isn’t just taking on other Android chips – it’s gunning for Apple’s crown. The new flagship processor is leaving Google’s current flagship Tensor G4 chip in the dust, with benchmark scores that should make the Pixel phone maker nervous. Before diving into all the nitty gritty, it’s worth noting that these benchmarks were shared by Qualcomm themselves with the press, so you might want to take the numbers with a grain of salt. The benchmark details I’m highlighting here were shared by the folks over at Android Authority on YouTube.

So with that out of the way, let’s dive in. In Geekbench 6 single-core tests, the Snapdragon 8 Elite scored an impressive 3,221, significantly outperforming the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s 1,976. Even more striking is the multi-core performance, where the 8 Elite reached 10,426 compared to the Pixel’s modest 4,763 – more than double the performance.

While the iPhone 16 Pro still leads in single-core performance at 3,354, the gap has narrowed considerably. More surprisingly, the 8 Elite’s multi-core score of 10,426 actually beats Apple’s 8,184, suggesting Qualcomm’s new custom Oryon CPU cores are delivering on their promise.

Gaming performance tells a similar story. In the Wildlife test, the 8 Elite scored 159 frames per second, handily beating its predecessor’s 114 fps. The Wildlife Extreme benchmark showed the same pattern, with the 8 Elite hitting 43 fps versus 32 fps on the Gen 3 chip.

The improvements aren’t just about raw power. Built on TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process, the chip promises 44% better power efficiency than its predecessor. Qualcomm has also packed in some serious gaming features, including being the first mobile chip to support Unreal Engine 5.3.

On the AI front, Qualcomm claims a 45% faster NPU with advanced multi-modal capabilities. This could give Android manufacturers a significant edge over Google’s AI-focused Tensor chips, which have historically prioritized machine learning over raw performance. You can check out Qualcomm’s website for all the tech specs.

The first phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite are expected to hit the market in early 2024, with manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi already confirmed as partners. Hopefully, Google’s decision to partner with TSMC for the Tensor G5 will pay off because Qualcomm has set the standards for 2025.
